Samsung Electronics' 2026 Wage Deal, Struck One Hour Before a General Strike
On the night of May 20, 2026, Samsung Electronics management and its unions signed a tentative wage agreement at the Gyeonggi Regional Employment and Labor Office — about one hour before a planned general strike was due to begin. Labor Minister Kim Young-hoon mediated the final round of talks.
Terms of the Agreement
As reported, the tentative deal covered:
- A 6.2% wage increase (4.1% base plus 2.1% average performance-based increase)
- A total performance bonus of roughly 12%: 1.5% in Overall Performance Incentive (OPI) plus a 10.5% special management performance bonus
- Company stock worth 6 million won for the DX Division and the CSS business team
- Institutionalizing the special management performance bonus over the following ten years
Strike Suspended, Members Ratify
The announced strike period ran from May 21 to June 7, but the tentative deal put it on hold. In the ratification vote held May 22–27, 95.5% of the 65,593 eligible union members took part, and 73.7% (46,142 members) voted in favor, ratifying the agreement. The signing ceremony was held on May 27.
What Remains Unresolved
The settlement did not end the dispute. Samsung Electronics has several unions, including the Cho-gieop Union's Samsung Electronics branch, the National Samsung Electronics Labor Union, and the Donghaeng Union. The Donghaeng Union opposed the deal and filed an injunction seeking to halt the ratification vote. Separately, a shareholder group sued, arguing that the bonus distribution scheme raises corporate-law problems.
